Legend has it that Punkin Chunkin™ started when several friends challenged each other to design a machine that could propel a pumpkin through the air. They brought their inventions to a nearby farm and the first battle began. The contraptions were primitive and the crowd was small, but theywere all wondering:

Could they make a pumpkin sail?

And sail they did! It all began in 1986, and has continued every year since. Over 100 teams from states all across the country competed in twelve different classes...all came vying for a trophy, bragging rights, and dreaming of breaking the world record, which stands at a distance of
almost a mile!

The event draws crowds in excess of 60,000 and the World Championship Punkin Chunkin Association donates $60,000 to $80,000 annually to local and national charities.
